Federal Ministry of Transport, Berlin

On the one hand, the lighting for the Federal Ministry was to blend in with the surroundings and make the building visible in the urban environment, while on the other hand, the requirements for modern, responsible lighting were to be met. In our planning, we implemented the Dark Sky guidelines for environmentally friendly lighting. The façade was illuminated exclusively using light projection techniques. This effectively reduced light emissions and avoided glare and disturbance caused by the illumination of the façade. A limiting factor for the installation was that only two mast positions were available for the illumination of the entire 70m long front elevation. These were located at the height of the corner risalits 8m in front of the façade.

The light projection method uses a projector to project the distortion-corrected images of the building onto the façade. Gobo masks are used to shape and direct the light. Black areas on the mask prevent light from escaping and different shades of gray can also be used to display brightness gradients.
